Los Angeles is a sprawling metropolis made up of many distinct neighborhoods. If you have a car you can stay almost anywhere in the city and technically (no traffic) it will take you 20 minutes to get anywhere. However LA has a lot of traffic and the streets are small and packed so make sure to plan your day and allow at least 45 minutes to get anywhere. Most LA hotels are pretty pricy but it is worth it. Unless you are staying for more than 2 weeks you will not see everything so best to plan your stay around a certain area. If you want to go to Universal Studios stay at any hotel near the theme park. This will put you at Hot Spots City Walk ( do not eat here) and just five minutes from Hollywood and Highland (popular tourist spot, do not dine here either). For good dining their is a tucked away street (Tunjunga) just five minutes north of Universal Studios that has great restaurants and is a local celebrity hang out. It is also the famed area where actor Robert Blake allegedly shot and killed his wife
